Marcellus Shale
The Marcellus Shale drilling boom, although at times controversial, is proving to be an incredible opportunity for many Pennsylvania companies, and individuals. It has created a boom in local jobs and provided many landowners and companies with opportunities that otherwise wouldn’t exist. Because the Marcellus Shale is a large section of shale containing valuable domestic natural gas which starts at the base of the Catskills in upstate New York and stretches through West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio with its deepest sections on the Southeast edge of the formation which borders the ridge and valley regions of New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia, it has positively affected not only the local region, but the Northeast United States as well.
In 2008, a Penn State professor of Geology named Terry Engelder estimated that based on drilling results, the amount of natural gas in the Marcellus Shale was 363 TCF of recoverable resource, which would be capable of supplying the United States consumption for at least fourteen years. If all of the Marcellus Shale is recoverable, that number will be much higher producing and extended resource for many years to come.
